Devizes Boat Club is a friendly club that welcomes new members and encourages them to take part in the club's activities — the more the merrier.

The programme of social events has always been varied — the club's first event was a treasure hunt to Wilcot with a barbeque in the grounds of the Golden Swan. The winners of that event organised the next year's treasure hunt ...  a custom that has continued — and prompted some boat crews to 'claim' they aim to do 'well-enough' not to disgrace themselves without actually winning.

The annual treasure hunt continues with a change of venue from time to time as do other events such as the skittles evenings and Christmas meals.

The club has had a wide range of speakers at events with boat maintenance and wine tasting — not on the same night — being particularly popular.

The club regularly has a large presence at the Newbury Waterways Festival, has taken part in the IWA Beale Park National Rallies and we have  joined Pewsey Wharf Boat Club at a rally at Crofton for the end of season steaming event at the Pumping Station in recent years

Rallies are regularly held at  Devizes Wharf  — especially over the Spring Bank Holiday — when the club's annual auction sale is always popular.

The beginnings

The club was formed in March 2000 when a group of boaters got together to discuss forming a club for boaters in the Devizes area.

A small committee produced a constitution and a programme of events and some of those founder members are still active in the club.

Club Logo

A competition to design a suitable logo for the club was won by Gordon Wardle's design depicting the 29 locks of the Devizes Flight and that logo is now used on club clothing, the website and on stationery.
